I am now two months in at Cranbrook Academy of art, in the Metals MFA program with Maria and Alberte and Josephine too. Mind shifting discussions about art are happening daily. The constant making and learning, workshops on professional practices, and regular lectures from visiting artists have made this experience completely engaging and really perfect. I have a few new directions now (12?) where I am exploring vulcanized rubber, aluminum, mesh, lawn chair webbing, and yes always clay, in some very new directions. I can not wait to share it all. Prints. Big. This will be a diptych. I am laying a coat of satin varnish over the images, in hopes of moving towards a more tangible piece. I want the images to work like objects. Strange little gem, an unlikely development. After two years of glaze chemistry I picked my old favorites — a white matte glaze and a simple black engobe over the top. This sculpture is based on trends and home goods. On dish-ware and on me and my grandmother and all the women in her generation, taking up ceramics as a hobby. It’s a play on all the things domestic with a specific note on the homemaker front. Fun, most of the time. It has all been a real hoot. Much love to you. Thank you for watching and for reading. This current body of photography and sculpture stems from working at home during the pandemic. Close physical quarters fed the photography and the photography now feeds the ceramic sculpture. My ceramics are conglomerates of porcelain and terracotta, layers of color and pattern, and are fused with high and low temperature glazes. With my mother in mind, I created this piece as a totem or a space holder or an object to capture the feelings I had in those small now distance moments of my mom, my family home in Greeley, Colorado, the sun, the dry smell of late summer—midday. We had a decorative barberry bush on the side of the house. I collected the berries. Over collected. I had a pile. The concept for these conglomerate pieces first came to me when I was accepted as a Winter Resident at Penland School of craft. The idea would take me many consecutive hours to work out — I had to build the sculpture with multiple parts, bisque and glaze firing each piece individually.
